Town History

Watkins Glen was settled in 1791, initially named "Jefferson", but later renamed in 1852 to honor Dr. Samuel Watkins.

From 1794 and beyond the town experienced growth, with mills being constructed around the gorge,

with many roads and shops being built after Samuel Watkins inherited the property after his brother's death.

Today, Watkins Glen is most famous for its racetrack, constructed in 1956. Since then, it has hosted races

for Formula One, NASCAR, IndyCar, IMSA, Trans Am, Can Am, and many other racing series.
